On the balcony

We sang from the corner of the choirloft on Sunday; the sound was wonderful in that beautiful room, the sanctuary of Plymouth Church. I thought of this painting at the Metropolitan, Henry Lerolle’s “The Organ Rehearsal,” which was hung for the first time in ages (presumably there hadn’t been a spare wall — the thing is giant) when the new 19th century galleries opened. I was thoroughly taken with it. I meant to ask Bruce, the music director, if he had seen the painting. Maybe I’ll get the chance this weekend.
